This, I believe.
student Engagement
Virginia Tech:
Forestry Club: I believe one should devote themselves and devote themselves fully. I would rather be active in a few organizations than a member in many. Another belief I have is to take advantage of new, sometimes uncomfortable, opportunities. I joined Forestry club on a complete whim yet have fallen in love. Not knowing a single thing about what I was getting into, I've found a group of open, ever-caring people that have introduced me to the College of Natural Resources and Environment. Through Forestry, I've become active in activities such as wood harvesting and timber sports. In Forestry, I have found an outlet by which to express myself and enjoy my new environment when the pressures of school become overwhelming.

Camera Trapping under Dr. Kelly: Everything I heard the beginning of the semester revolved around a sing phrase, "get involved early." When I picture my perfect college experience, I imagine working firsthand with professors on a variety of interesting research projects. Because of this, I got involved with Dr. Kelly's study on Mountain Lake. Many sundays I would hike with a group of students, replacing cameras and collecting data. During the week I would then review the film and record the animals present. I feel this experience has further stimulated my interest in wildlife science and am excited for what projects I may get involved with in the future. As I look forward to my sophomore spring semester where I hope to complete a study abroad on Réunion Island, I'm thankful for faculty such as Dr. Kelly and Dr. Fraser who have worked with me one on one to ensure that I will fulfill my research goals.
Continued Engagement:
Camp Sea Gull: I have always spent my summers at camp. From going with my parents to their childhood camps, to going by myself to a camp in Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, to now working at a camp in North Carolina, I feel the camp experience is one vital to a child's development and maturation. This past summer I worked as part of the headquarters team of a reputable sailing camp, blowing bugles, making calls, and directing a majority of the daily activity that occurred. At camp, I've learned the valuable lessons of character, collaboration, empowerment, empathy, integrity, and responsibility. I am truly the person I am today because of my experiences and growth at camp. I attribute my greatest strengths to how I was raised: learner, ideation, intellection, relator, and achiever. As I am now in college, I've been increasingly asked what I'll do this summer. Internship? Co-op? Research? No, I'm going back to camp. Even if only for one more summer, I am proud of the person I have become and would like to continue my inner growth toward the best version of myself possible.

Aspirations for further learning
"The future belongs to the curious. The ones who are not afraid to try it, explore it, poke at it, question it and turn it inside out." -Anonymous I am curious. Cat-like you'd might say. Gets distracted easily, forever jumping from one thing to another, playful, intuitive, and determined. "I myself am made of flaws, stitched together with good intentions." I embrace my quirks not as blemishes but fine points of personality. I embrace disorder, for through nonconformity do we discover individuality. I do not want to fit into a cookie-cutter society. I want to celebrate, discover, and smile as I chase life's twists and turns. I am forever running after new knowledge in a desperate attempt to satisfy my inquiry.

Looking forward, I want to take advantage of every opportunity offered to me in the College of Natural Resources and Environment and the Honors Program in order to start out ahead of the competition once I graduate from Virginia Tech or finish graduate school. Aside from sticking to my major, I want to enjoy college and take classes that interest me in order to become a more well rounded student. Virginia Tech, itself, is already robust in its choices of classes, learning environments, and study body. I only wish to contribute my share of individuality. I don’t want to simply graduate as a science major but as a well-rounded individual in order to account for and be prepared for any uncertainty that lies ahead. As I have always maintained a healthy sense of ambition and accomplishment, I trust my ability to attain personal success from my social environment to academia. I believe in being overly ambitious rather than overly cautious. I want to prepare myself for a lifetime ahead by doing absolutely everything possible to ensure happiness. I want to spend time abroad, learn a new culture, have hands-on experience with foreign and intriguing wildlife, devote myself to a few clubs, and efficiently utilize the little time I have here in Blacksburg.
"Every aspect of my life has been like this: messy, confusing, yet beautiful and interesting when looked at as a whole. "
I truly am the human representation of a collage. When you get to know the person I am, I guarantee you will see the diversity of my interests, the nonconformity of my habits, and the obscurity of my persona stitched beautifully together by the ambitious and unpredictable twinkle in my eye. I am determined to make a difference during my life. Though I may not have every step laid out, I like where my feet are taking me. My life has been a hodgepodge of ups, downs, accomplishments, and failures. I've learned, I've forgiven, I've been forgiven, I've accomplished great things, and sometimes I've come up short, but when it comes down it, I've lived.
